Walkers 4 Life Take on the San Francicso Bay Area 3-Day For The Cure

Posted by admin | Breast Cancer 3 Day,Susan G Komen For The Cure | Saturday 17 September 2011 8:52 pm

Wow what a weekend!!

The San Francisco 3-Day was like no other 3-Day so far Walkers not only walked up and down and up more hills imaginable they rode a Ferry back and forth to Treasure Island where they camped in high winds for 2 nights!! What fun it was!! The adventure started early Friday morning at Cow Palace after moving and very motivating opening ceremonies. Walkers walked thru the city and then thru trials with breathtaking ocean views and finally thru Fisherman’s Wharf. This was all day one and day 2 we saw even more incredible views and even had the opportunity to walk through UC Berkley. Day 3 we rode the ferry once again to Tiburon and walked through Sausalito and crossed the infamous San Francisco Bridge and finished our 60 mile Journey at Marina Green for closing ceremonies.

Sure the San Francisco 3-Day had a tough course and had more logistics than any other 3-Day so far but Walkers and Crew sailed through it all flawlessly! Walkers4life is proud and happy to have been part of it all. Opening Ceremonies were special as Rich,  Robin and Cindy were part of the opening and closing ceremonies. Then Saturday night our team Captain Robin spoke about her Survivorship and what the 3-day community means to her. This walk was very special to Robin as it was not only her 8 year of survivorship but her 44th birthday as well. Walkers4life surprised Robin which was no easy feat. However, we managed to make a banner signed by the team and surprise Robin on the route. Robin’s family was also in on surprise as her Mother Mary Lee, daughter Emily and Son Zach came out and joined in the festivities Saturday Night! Another nice part of the weekend was Cindy having her son Hunter there in San Francisco with her. It was especially nice that Walkers4life Mardi showed Hunter around town as they cheered the walkers on!!

Walkers4life were honored to have Linda join us in San Francisco. Must say we are really proud of Linda and all she does to help end Breast Cancer. Walkers4life is more than a strong team of woman and men we are family. We all have the same mission to put an end to Cancer! We fundraise we train we walk we do just about everything but walk away!

We are Walkers4life!!!

Now that the 2010 3-Day for the Cure season is over some of our team members are starting a running group starting in January. In order to keep myself motivated I have started a team for the Race for the Cure in Los Angeles, our team is Runners 4 Life. I have ran the Race for the Cure before in L.A. and the Inland Empire, in 2010 my teammate Cindy and I ran in the Orange County and Inland Empire Race for the Cure events, and in San Diego Cindy ran once again and I walked with my daughter.

One Husband’s San Francisco Susan G Komen 3 Day For The Cure Experience

Posted by admin | Breast Cancer 3 Day,Susan G Komen For The Cure | Wednesday 6 October 2010 9:37 pm

OMG was that the hardest 60+ miles I have ever done. At least a couple times a month, I will do 60 miles in a weekend or in a single day with no problems. But, boy am I sore today. Don’t get me wrong, I am not complaining at all. I had a blast and I will never forget it.

What am I talking about? The San Francisco 3 Day walk. No, I didn’t walk 60 miles!! Do you think I am crazy? But I now know 1400 awesome people that were crazy enough to walk 60 miles.

I had the “easy” job of crewing Route Safety on my bicycle for these last 3 days and I am still on an emotional high. It was such a blast riding around that beautiful city for over 60 miles. I did not take my job light hearted. I was on a mission to keep my walkers safe from all of idiots in cars that felt like they were in a hurry and could not stop at stop signs or needed to try to roll through red lights. How did I accomplish this? I made sure I had brightly colored clothes and danced, skipped and hopped around through the crosswalks to make sure these idiot drivers stopped and paid attention to me so they would not hit my walkers.

My other job was to keep my walkers from thinking about their tired feet, legs, hips or lower backs. How did I accomplish this task? I spent the previous weekend wrapping my bike with bright pink medical rubber tape to match the color theme of this great event. I also had about 200 songs on my BlackBerry that was connected to a speaker that was blasting this upbeat music to make them think about wanting to dance with me or at least sing along with me. So you are probably wondering how well of a dancer and singer I must be. Well, according to my Wife, I am terrible at both. But my walkers were smiling and loving it. My Wife states they were just laughing at a grown (but handsome) man wearing a bright pink tu-tu, bright orange route crew shirt and a bright yellow safety vest dancing and singing off key. There is no way my walkers would be laughing at me. They must have been laughing with me. Right?? Either way, I am pretty sure I got their mind off their sore bodies and if that helped them finish the walk, then it was well worth it.

My 1400 SF 3 Day walkers are awesome. They worked all year fund-raising at least $2300. They trained multiple weekends to get ready for this great event. I had the easy job.

There is no way I will miss next year’s walk. I am so addicted.

Thanks to all of my walkers. I love you. This includes my most favorite walker. My wonderful, beautiful, loving Wife. I am proud and very happy to say that my Wife Robin is a 7 year breast cancer SURVIVOR!!! And there is nothing stopping her from supporting this cause and spreading awareness of early detection.

Thanks again to everyone for making this an unforgettable event.
